About Us
From a small settlement of three families in 1792, Tecumseh developed from a local service centre then known as Ryegate Postal Station to become a prosperous and flourishing community. In 1912 Ryegate was renamed Tecumseh by the townspeople in honour of Chief Tecumseh, leader of the Shawnee Tribe who was killed in battle during the war of 1812. A community gradually developed from a majority of French descendants who in the 1700's had established their seigniorial land holdings along the banks of the Detroit River.
The creation of Tecumseh road in 1838 and the establishment of the Great Western Railway opened the area for settlement. The community housed a sawmill, several stores and hotels in 1873 with a population of 200. In 1921 Tecumseh was incorporated as a town with a population of 978 and has continued to grow to well over 24,200 people (2008).
